Statement by Troika of Community of Democracies on Daw Aung San Suu Kyi
Recalling the discussion at the Ministerial Meeting of the UN Democracy Caucus on 24 September 2009 in New York,
Supporting a unified, peaceful, and democratic Burma also known as Myanmar and assuring its people of strong and unwavering support,
Commending the ongoing international effort towards freedom and democracy in Burma/Myanmar,
Expressing its grave concern that the estrangement from the international community harms the country’s people and stifles economic and political development,
Expresses its deep concern about the development of the trial of the Leader of the National League for Democracy Daw Aung San Suu Kyi;
Appeals the government of Burma/Myanmar to end gross human rights abuses in the country, including violations of the freedom of expression and the continued detention of political prisoners;
Call for the immediate and unconditional release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners, and initiation of a credible, time-bound political dialogue between the regime, the democratic opposition and ethnic minority leaders leading to national reconciliation, political reforms and transparent fair and democratic multiparty elections.
