Statement by the Secretary General Thomas E. Garrett on execution of pro-democracy and opposition leaders in Myanmar
I join Member States of the Community of Democracies Governing Council in condemning the Myanmar military regime’s politically motivated execution of pro-democracy and opposition leaders Ko Jimmy, Phyo Zeya Thaw, Hla Myo Aung, and Aung Thura Zaw.This despicable act of violence shows an utter disregard for human rights and a complete erosion of the rule of law. As the Secretary General of the Community of Democracies, I urge the military regime in Myanmar to immediately stop the use of violence and human rights abuse, release all arbitrarily detained prisoners, and restore the rule of law and democratically elected government. The CoD continues to stand with the people of Myanmar in their aspirations for freedom and democracy.
