Meeting highlights:

Kateryna Ryabiko – based on her experience of working with Ukrainian refugees, she shared touching stories of the resilience of refugees, particularly those who’ve lost everything to the war. She underscored the critical need for accountability for Russia’s actions: “We either ensure accountability or give in to impunity.”

Johannes Danielsson shared his unique perspective as a diplomat in Moscow during the early days of the invasion, shedding light on Russia’s propaganda machine and how Russian society’s initial shock evolved into passive support. He also reaffirmed Sweden’s continued commitment to supporting Ukraine.

Ludovica Efrati highlighted the active role of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in supporting Ukrainian SMEs and initiatives run by the refugees, as well as its work to ensure the stability of Ukraine’s economy.  She also shared stories from thriving Ukrainian businesses.

Prof. Patrice McMahon, who led the event, emphasized the transformative role of Ukrainian civil society today and its potential for leading the post-war recovery and reconstruction process, asserting: Reconstruction must be done with the people, not for the people.”

The resilience of the Ukrainian people is not just a narrative of survival; it’s a story of strength, courage, and an unbreakable spirit. The Community of Democracies continues to stand in solidarity with Ukraine and Ukrainian people.
