Secretary General Leissner Congratulates U.S. President-elect Donald Trump

The people of the United States have expressed their political will through free and fair elections. I congratulate President-elect Donald Trump on his victory at the polls after a hard-fought campaign and wish him well as he prepares to assume his responsibilities as head of the U.S. government.

The United States has long played an important role within the Community of Democracies under presidents from both major parties, and currently holds the rotating presidency of the organisation for another year. I look forward to working with the new administration to continue our joint efforts in support of democracy and human rights around the world, including our longstanding efforts to protect and enable civil society in all countries.
