Every year, the Permanent Secretariat commemorates the International Day of Democracy. At the opening event for 2014, Secretary General of the Community of Democracies, Ambassador Maria Leissner, hosted today journalists and representatives of the media based in Warsaw for an informal lunch.
The lunch was held with the participation of journalists and correspondents from a variety of agencies and countries, ranging from India and Morocco to Poland, the United States, and more. It aimed to increase the acquaintance of local and global media with the work of the Community, and Secretary General Leissner used the opportunity to talk about the history, values, and current activities of the Community. “Our main goal is to create a strong, global commitment to democracy”, said Secretary General Leissner while presenting the Community.
Secretary General Leissner and the journalists discussed recent developments in democracy around the world and the Community’s response to them, such as the recent decision to engage in dialogue with the Government of Ukraine regarding the establishment of a Democracy Partnership with the country.
The meeting was held on the occasion of the International Day of Democracy, celebrated this year under the theme of “engaging youth in democracy”. In this light, the Secretary General reiterated the Community’s strong support and commitment to promoting youth participation through the Community’s various platforms, such as the Youth Dimension.
