The Community of Democracies is pleased to announce that as of September 15th the Community’s Executive Committee (EC) is chaired by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The United Kingdom succeeds the Republic of Chile which served as the EC Chair from March 15th until September 15th, 2018.
‘’It is an honour for the UK to take up the Chairmanship of the Community of Democracies’ Executive Committee today. I commend the work of the Chilean Chairmanship, and pledge our commitment to continuing to advance the democratic principles set out in the Warsaw Declaration.” – said the United Kingdom’s Minister for Human Rights Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon.
Since joining the Governing Council of the Community of Democracies in December 2016, the United Kingdom has played an active role in the Community, adding an important voice to efforts to strengthen democracy by protecting human rights and enabling civil society across the world.
The United Kingdom co-sponsored a number of resolutions at the UN Human Rights Council and the General Assembly Third Committee, including resolutions on youth, the safety of journalists, freedom of religion or belief and human rights defenders- all of which are relevant to the Community’s work and its shared values enshrined in the Warsaw Declaration.
