Community of Democracies and International IDEA strengthen cooperation for the promotion and support of democracy

The Permanent Secretariat of the Community of Democracies (PSCD) and the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen their cooperation for the promotion and support of democracy.

The agreement formalizes and strengthens the long-standing successful cooperation between the Community of Democracies (CoD) and the International IDEA and provides the working framework for inter-institutional dialogue and further cooperation between the two organizations.

The CoD and International IDEA will work closer together on a range of areas of mutual interest including: developing initiatives focused on the critical link between democracy and development, promoting inclusive participation in democratic processes, supporting initiatives focused on the protection of civic space, and promoting dialogue on the implementation of international democratic instruments.

‘’ I look forward to continuing our longstanding and productive cooperation with International IDEA to deepen the dialogue on the complex challenges and new opportunities for democracy, promote our shared democratic values and strengthen democratic institutions’’– said Thomas E. Garrett, Secretary General of the Community of Democracies.

The agreement was signed on November 30th, 2018, in Stockholm, Sweden, by the Secretary General of the Community of Democracies, Thomas E. Garrett and the Secretary General of International IDEA, Yves Leterme.
