The Community of Democracies welcomes Panama as a new Member of its Governing Council

Warsaw, November 7, 2023- Panama joins the Governing Council of the Community of Democracies (CoD), an intergovernmental coalition of states working to strengthen democracy, human rights, and the rule of law worldwide.

As a stable and peaceful democracy from the Americas, Panama will bring an important voice and add to the diversity of the CoD Governing Council, which includes Member States from various world regions.  Panama is among 106 countries that, in 2000, adopted the founding document of the Community of Democracies, the Warsaw Declaration, which outlines core democratic norms and principles.

Most recently, CoD Secretary General Thomas E. Garrett and Chair of the Civil Society Pillar Enrique de Obarrio visited Panama in August 2023, and met with President Nito Cortizo and Foreign Minister Janaina Tewaney Mencomo to discuss Panama’s further engagement with the CoD.

“I am pleased to welcome Panama as a new Governing Council member. Panama’s experience of building an inclusive democracy and a strong economy will be an asset to the Community of Democracies, which provides a unique venue for countries with diverse backgrounds and at different stages of the democratic path to share lessons learned and facilitate joint democratic action”- said Secretary General Thomas E. Garrett.
