PRESS RELEASE

Secretary General to attend Muhammadu Buhari’s Presidential Inauguration

The Secretary General of the Community of Democracies, Maria Leissner, will make an official visit to Nigeria on May 28, 2015.  The purpose of the visit is to attend newly elected Muhammadu Buhari’s presidential inauguration on Friday, May 29th.

The recent elections had proven to be the most competitive in Nigeria’s history and the strength of its citizens dominated the public sphere through the compliance with democratic standards and electoral processes. Outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan has been internationally acclaimed for a smooth transition out of office. Prior to and during the elections, the Community of Democracies’ senior advisor, Matyas Eorsi, had been in the country for several election observation missions.

The Secretary General extends her warmest congratulations to elected President Muhammadu Buhari on this historical milestone. The global community has commended Nigeria’s relentless efforts towards a sustainable democracy, which has set a precedent for other African nations.

Between May 30 and June 1, the Secretary General will be attending high-level meetings with regional and international delegations as well as with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria.
