Secretary General Thomas E. Garrett will make his first official visit to the Republic of The Gambia on July 17-20, 2018.

Secretary General of the Community of Democracies Thomas E. Garrett will travel to the Republic of The Gambia on July 17-20, 2018 on his first official visit to the country. Secretary General will meet with high-level government officials and representatives of civil society organizations to discuss how the Community of Democracies may support democratic reforms that are underway in The Republic of The Gambia.

During the meetings, Secretary General will present the Community’s strategic objectives and discuss potential areas of cooperation to support the implementation of The Gambia’s 2018-2021 National Development Plan, which outlines the steps to deliver good governance, accountability and social cohesion.

As part of the Community of Democracies’ mission to support democratic transition and consolidation worldwide, this visit presents a welcome opportunity to discuss how the Community of Democracies may support The Gambia’s continued democratic journey’’—said SG Garrett.  

In line with the Community’s strategic objectives, Member States of the Governing Council coordinate their support for democratic consolidation in transitioning countries, cooperate to encourage adherence to core democratic principles of the Warsaw Declaration, and deepen dialogue on the challenges and opportunities for democratization.
