Secretary General’s Statement on the Joint Communique on a Peace Framework for Ukraine

I am deeply grateful for the decision by 23 Member States of the Community of Democracies Governing Council (GC) to participate in the Joint Communique on a Peace Framework following the High-Level Summit for Ukraine. In the face of the Russian widescale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, 19 GC Member States from all regions of the world promptly convened an emergency meeting to condemn Russia and pledge their support for Ukraine’s democracy, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. The increase in the number of Members of the Governing Council opposed to Russia’s unjustified war reflects support for Ukraine and for the Community of Democracies’ commitment to the United Nations Charter and the rule of law.
