Statement by the Secretary General Mantas Adomėnas on Moldova’s Presidential Elections and Constitutional Referendum

As the Secretary General of the Community of Democracies, I would like to congratulate people of Moldova and President Maia Sandu on their commitment to stay on the path toward European Union.

I strongly condemn Kremlin’s attempts to interfere in the electoral process. Attempts of malign actors linked to Russia to subvert Moldova’s presidential election and constitutional referendum on EU membership through disinformation, voter fraud, and the financing of criminal activities are unacceptable.

Moldova, as a member of the Community of Democracies, may rely on our support in countering Russian hybrid activities. As stated in the Warsaw Declaration, “the will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government, as expressed by exercise of the right and civic duties of citizens to choose their representatives through regular, free and fair elections”.
