Statement by the Secretary General of the Community of Democracies on the Tragic Death of U Ko Ni

The Secretary General of the Community of Democracies was deeply shocked and saddened by the news of the assasination of U Ko Ni, at Yangon airport on the 29th of January
U Ko Ni was a legal adviser to Myanmar’s leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, and the National League for Democracy. He was a distinguished lawyer and a very devote advocate for democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. As a prominent and widely respected member of Myanmar’s Muslim community, he was a great advocate of religious tolerance and pluralism.
His death is a great loss for the people of Myanmar and the world’s human rights community.
The Secretary General extends her sincerest and heartfelt condolences to U Ko Ni’s family and friends, and expects those responsible for the murder to be held accountable.
