Statement by the Secretary General of the Community of Democracies on the Upcoming Elections in Armenia
May 28, 2026
I welcome Armenia’s democratic course as the country approaches its upcoming elections on June 7, and encourage all stakeholders – political parties, electoral authorities, civil society, and media, – to contribute to an inclusive, peaceful, and trustworthy electoral process that reflects the will of the people. I commend the determination of the Armenian people to defend democratic values, strengthen institutions, actively participate in shaping their country’s future through peaceful and democratic means, protect hard-won peace, and assert their commitment to upholding their country’s freely chosen path.
As democracies around the world face growing threats from pressure by the aggressive authoritarian regimes and from foreign information manipulation and interference, I call on citizens, media, and civil society in Armenia to remain vigilant, to guard their sovereignty and freedom, and to protect their democracy from coercion, polarisation, and manipulation. Committed and well-informed citizens constitute democracy’s most resilient defence, and I stand firmly in support of Armenia’s democratic journey.
