The Community of Democracies and the Organization of American States agreed to strengthen already existing cooperation to focus further on democracy and development.

The Permanent Secretariat of the Community of Democracies (PSCD) and the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (GS/ OAS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen their cooperation for the promotion and consolidation of democracy.

The agreement was signed on September 28th, 2018, in Washington D.C. by the Secretary General of the Community of Democracies Thomas E. Garrett and the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) Luis Almagro.

Considering the challenges and opportunities facing democracy in the current global environment and the diplomatic tools and capabilities of both organizations, the agreement formalizes and strengthens the already existing cooperation between the Community of Democracies and the Organization of American States.

Areas of cooperation will include, among others: developing initiatives focused on the critical link between democracy and development, promoting inclusive participation in democratic processes and supporting initiatives focused on the protection of civic space.

Thomas E. Garrett, Secretary General of the Community of Democracies said:

‘’ This agreement is an important step towards enhancing our joint efforts to promote and strengthen democratic values and institutions at the regional and global level. I look forward to continuing our cooperation with the OAS to support our shared democratic values.’’
