Report from the African regional workshop on protecting civic space

This report summarises the findings and recommendations from the African Regional Workshop on Protecting Civil Space, held 17-18 November 2014 at the University of Pretoria in South Africa and convened by ICNL, CIVICUS and the Community of Democracies in cooperation with Maina Kiai, UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and Association.

The workshop was convened on the recommendation of the Civil Society Forum held on the margins of the 2014 US-Africa Leaders’ Summit and included 48 participants representing African civil society organisations, international organisations and donor agencies. It included plenary discussions, a panel presentation, small group discussions on key topics, and presentations from global leaders on the protection of civic space.

The findings and recommendations identify the current restrictions on civic space and civil society, and propose methods of combatting these issues for African CSOs and international donors.
