Mali Returns to the Governing Council of the Community of Democracies

Mali Returns to the Governing Council of the Community of Democracies

In its meeting today in New York, the Governing Council of the Community of Democracies decided to reinstate Mali as member of the Council.

Mali was member of the Governing Council, and served as the Presidency of the Community of Democracies in the years 2005-2007. In 2012, Mali’s membership in the Governing Council was suspended, following the military coup d’etat that overthrew the democratic regime in the country.

After the suspension of Mali’s membership in the Governing Council, a special Group of Friends, led by Canada and Nigeria, was established to assist Mali’s effort to re-consolidate democracy in the country, and to report to the Council on progress in the efforts.

Following the re-establishment of democratic norms in the country, the Governing Council decided to renew Mali’s membership in the Council.
